DR.FAUSTUS is a play by Christopher Marlowe, based on the German story, in which a man sells his soul to the devil for power, experience, pleasure and knowledge, and how his "HUBRIS" pulled him towards his own tragic fall.
RESPECTED SIR,
Here is my answer of all three questions.
1) The play directed by Matthew Dunster for Globe theatre ends with this scene (see the image of Lucifer). What does it signify?
Ans: The play directed by Matthew Dunster for Globe theatre ends with the scene of Lucifer with wide wings signifies the victory of LUCIFER/ EVIL on GOD/GOOD. we can say that Lucifer became more power full after taking a soul of Dr. Faustus. IN the last scene of play when time was 11 and Faustus started repenting because 24 years comes to end now, he prey GOD to save him but GOD was helpless to save Faustus, [I think according to karma; famous philosophy of Hinduism]. conflict between GOOD and EVIL in which EVIL wins and above picture is signifies it.
Ans: I think GOD is present in play not physically but in sense of GOOD ANGLE, THE OLD MAN and also in character of GOOD FRIENDS.
- O, thou hast lost celestial happiness, Pleasures unspeakable, bliss without end Hadst thou affected sweet divinity, Hell or the devil had had no power on thee: Hadst thou kept on that way,… ... And now, poor soul, must thy good angel leave thee: The jaws of hell are open to receive thee . GOOD ANGLE
- O gentle Faustus, leave this damned art, This magic, that will charm thy soul to hell, And quite bereave thee of salvation! Though thou hast now offended like a man, Do not persever in it like a devil: Yet, yet thou hast an amiable soul, If sin by custom grow not into nature; Then, Faustus, will repentance come too late; Then thou art banish'd from the sight of heaven: No mortal can express the pains of hell. THE OLD MAN
3) What reading and interpretation can be given to this image (see the image of Daedalus and Icarus) with reference to central theme of the play Dr. Faustus?
Ans: In Greek mythology, Icarus succeeded in flying, with wings made by his father Daedalus, using feathers secured with wax. Ignoring his father's warnings, Icarus chose to fly too close to the sun, melting the wax, and fell into the sea and drowned. At the same way in DR. FAUSTUS Because of the "excelling" nature of his studies and practice, Faustus is, like Icarus in the ancient myth, placed in danger of enantiodromia, the reversal of opposites. The psycho-physical law of enantiodromia proclaims that the steep ascent is inevitably followed by the descent" Here it was a 'HUBRIS' of FAUSTUS which led him towards his tragic fall . Above picture signifies biblical theme of Disobedience ; icarus disobey his fathers warnings in same way FAUSTUS disobey GOD , and thus MYTHOLOGY of ICARUS AND DAEDALUS became central theme of play .
THANK YOU,
