The Archetypes of Literature (1951): Northrop Frye = Thinking activity

➤Northrop Frye

Hello Readers,
Here I'm going to share my own viwes reagrding academic thinking activity on 'The Archetypes of Literature' written by Northrop Frye.

Teacher's original Task-
Welcome: Northrop Frye: The Archetypes of Literature

1] What is Archetypal Criticism? What does the archetypal critic do?

In literary criticism the term archetype denotes recurrent narratives designs, patterns of action, character-types, themes, and images which are identifiable in a wide variety of works of literature, as well as in myths, dreams, and even social rituals.
Ex:
1] Myths:
As we know that there are many similarities between Indian Hindu myths and Greek myths. Here I have given some of the examples like:

 [A] Indra and Zeus

Both Indra and Zeus are the “kings” of the gods. In addition, their weapons are
thunderbolts (in Indra’s case, called the Vajra). Both of them slay a sea-monster: Indra’s opponent is the serpent Vritra; Zeus fights and vanquishes Typhon.

[B] Sita and Persephone

Both Sita and Persephone were abducted against their will — Sita by Ravana and Persephone by Hades. The myths also tell of both of them disappearing under the earth, albeit under dissimilar circumstances.

            2] Literature:
In Literature also we can find same Archetype in Indian Movies as well as western movies or Books. Like Romeo and Juliet we can find Heer and Ranja as well as Leila Majnu; same Archetype used in Ramleela also, we can see that no story perfectly match with other; still the pattern which exist it helps to understand and read literature.

2]What is Frye trying prove by giving an analogy of ' Physics to Nature' and 'Criticism to Literature'?

Frye uses the seasons in his archetypal schema. Each season is aligned with a literary genre: comedy with spring, romance with summer, tragedy with autumn, and satire with winter.

.        Comedy is aligned with spring because the genre of comedy is characterized by the birth of the hero, revival and resurrection. Also, spring symbolizes the defeat of winter and darkness.
·        Romance and summer are paired together because summer is the culmination of life in the seasonal calendar, and the romance genre culminates with some sort of triumph, usually a marriage.
·        Autumn is the dying stage of the seasonal calendar, which parallels the tragedy genre because it is, known for the “fall” or demise of the protagonist.
·        Satire is metonymized with winter on the grounds that satire is a “dark” genre. Satire is a disillusioned and mocking form of the three other genres. It is noted for its darkness, dissolution, the return of chaos, and the defeat of the heroic figure. (Barad)

3]Mention the relationship of literature with history and philosophy.

History is about events or actions of the past while philosophy is about ideas or way of knowledge used. So literature used knowledge of past by use of ideas and create literature. For understanding literature reader must refer history for events and Philosophy for ideas. Frye has used the word centrifugal, which means go away from literature and find background for understanding literature. So if such pattern exists, then criticism would be to art what philosophy is to knowledge and history to action.

4]Briefly explain inductive method with illustration of Shakespeare's Hamlet's Grave digging scene.

Inductive method is journey from specific to general. We read some specifics literary works and by these reading we come to some conclusion denotes inductive method. The best example from 'Hamlet' is Grave digging scene where 2 diggers are talking with one another and singing songs during their work of Grave digging, we can see that they are happy with their work they have neither pain nor grief for deadone so after that we come to know that they are now hebituated by their work and from these perticular scene we come to the conclusion that each and every Grave diggers became emotionless because of their daily work.

5]Briefly explain deductive method with reference to an analogy to music, painting, rhythm and pattern? give example of the outcome of deductive method.

Deductive method is journey from general to specific. In music we can understan rhythem of it where as in paining we can find pattern or colours; but by listening some of the lines from music we are not able to understan everything but by a looking at painting we can get idea of it's pattern.

6]Apply archetypal approach in any poem with reference to the Indian seasonal grid.

(Seasons) -

Sooraj tapta dharti jalti
garam hawa zoron se chalti.
Tan se bahut paseena bahata.
Haath sabhi ke pankha rahta.

Aa re badal kaale badal
Garmi door bhaga re badal.
Rimjhim boonde barsa badal
Jham-Jham paani barsa badal.

Lo ghanghor ghatayen chhayein
Tap-tap-tap-tap boondein aayein.
bijali chamak rahi ab cham-cham.
Laga barasne paani jham-jham

Lekar apne saath diwali
sardi aayee badi nirali
sham savere sardi lagati
par sweater se hai vah bhagati

sardi jaati garmi aati
rang rang ke phool khilati
rang-rangeeli holi aati
sabke man umang bhar jaati

Raat aur din huye barabar
sotay log nikal kar bahar
sardi bilkul nahi satati
sardi jaati garmi aati.

In india there are 3 seasons which are known as main seasons of the year.
- summer
- winter
-monsoon
in these poem poet discribes all three seasons of the year and also some of the main festivals and effects of these seasons on human life. There is a huge diffrance between winter of western world and Indian winter season, In western world it reflects death, and darkness where as here in India winter come with festivals and celebrations; in the same manner other seasons are also discribed here.
